I think Malayalis, inherently lazy, unconsciously wants a break once in a while. They want to spend some quality time with their family. They want to meet their neighbours once in a while. They want get their exams postponed. They want to come out of the stress induced by the high speed world around them. Can you guys think of any other day – other than the hartal day – to get all these things done in one shot? Onam ? Christmas ? No way – Only hartal works for everybody

Apart from the laziness, I also think Malayalis are highly environment conscious. When China had to force vehicles off the road during Beiging Olympics, We, the Malayalis, ensure that vehicles are off the road for every silly reason. Gosh !! we are saving a lot of petrol on Hartal days !!

Archana, your intentions are good but the society you are preaching has already accepted hartals as their official unplanned vacation. But yeah !! looking at the competitive world, we cannot be lazy – neither the society. Most importantly, I didnt authorize any petty political party to control my freedom. I dont care what their silly reasons are, but they dont have the right to restrict my freedom of movement. Perhaps we ( the people and political parties) could mutually agree to set aside one or two days of every month for hartal. Long live our democracy!!

I do agree with you. I have been writing letters and articles against all forms of harthals and bandhs for the past few years. Unfortunately, nobody bothers.

It is time to people come out of fear. Nowhere in the world you can see a harthal organised by the ruling government.. It happens only in Kerala..
